Early warning informatics system for air pollution in Thessaloniki

The research projects aims at the creation of an informatics system that will  make use of state-of-the-art internet and mobile phone technologies for providing citizen-centered, personalized, environment related information services on an operational basis. The thematic area of interest is air pollution, and the area of application is the Greater Thessaloniki Area. Messaging loops will include e-mail and SMS, and will contain observation data as well as forecasts made by innovative artificial intelligence methods. This is a 2 year project, that will start at the end of the year 2006,and is supported by the Organisation of Master Plan and Environmental Protection of Thessaloniki and by the Region of Central Macedonia. UPDATE:Understanding and Providing a Developmental Approach to Technology Education (2007-2009, FP6-2005-Science-and-society)

Several studies conducted by the European Union (e.g., Eurostat 2004, Implementation of 'education and training 2010' work programme) demonstrate that women and girls are continuously dramatically underrepresented in science and technological education, areas, and jobs. This is highlighted in the Joint Interim Report 'Education and Training 2010' by the European Commission under domain of Maths, Science and Technology (MST). The joint report points out the persistent shortage of women in scientific and technical fields and calls on Member States to encourage the development of a scientific and technical culture among its citizens. In particular, action was recommended in order to motivate young people, especially girls, to undertake scientific and technical studies and careers. Even in countries where gender imbalance is not a problem in the areas of mathematics and science, there is a marked imbalance when technology subjects are taken into account. Technology, where the science is put into action, is an area where the gender imbalance culminates, and therefore the focus of the UPDATE project.

The UPDATE project's aim is threefold: 1) to examine why girls drop out from technology education at different stages of their education, and 2) to create new ways and educational methods to make the image of technology and technological careers more attractive for both boys and girls, and 3) to promote, encourage and mobilize especially girls and young women for engineering and technology both as a career, and as active users of modern technology.


ISBEEM is an informatics system for indoor environment and energy management in school buildings. Java-oriented, open source related technologies are used, that allow for flexible, adaptable and low cost applications to be developed. The system and its services are platform neutral, support access via the internet using PC’s, laptops, PDAs or mobile phones, and are made available via http://isbeem.meng.auth.gr.
The project is funded by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology, Greece, (May 2005-Dec 2007).

APNEE Take Up: The APNEE-TU project is a follow up of APNEE, aiming at enhancing the functionality it offered by providing a variety of additional outgoing electronic information channels targeting mobile devices such as mobile phones and PDA's, while enlarging the application domain to include new sources of environmental information and promoting new exploitation avenues in coordination with national and regional authorities as well as data and service providers. New technologies utilised in APNEE-TU include J2ME, and Web Services in conjunction with emerging wireless protocols such as GPRS. Note: Work in APNEE & APNEE-TU was done by ISAG members before creating the ISAG research group, but as part of the Lab. of Heat Transfer and Environmental Engineering (IST 5FP)
